The notion that animals possess souls and exist in a spiritual dimension is a widely accepted belief of Spiritualism. Many believe that animals are not merely physical beings but have the same divine essence as humans. Here we look at the role animals play in spiritualism.
The Spiritual Essence of Animals
At the heart of many spiritual traditions is the belief that every living being possesses a soul. This idea transcends cultural and religious boundaries, appearing in various forms across different societies. In Eastern philosophies such as Hinduism and Buddhism, animals are often seen as manifestations of divine energy, their souls traveling through cycles of reincarnation. In Indigenous cultures, animals are revered as spirit guides and teachers, embodying wisdom and insight that can bridge the physical and spiritual worlds.
From a spiritualist perspective, the soul of an animal is not just a reflection of physical existence but a part of a greater, universal consciousness. This soul is thought to be a vessel for growth, learning, and spiritual evolution, much like the human soul. It is believed that animals experience emotions, make choices, and have their own unique spiritual journeys. The idea is that their existence contributes to the cosmic tapestry in ways we might not fully comprehend but can deeply respect.
Animals as Spiritual Beings
One of the compelling aspects of the belief in animals having souls is the way it fosters a deeper connection between humans and animals. If we view animals as spiritual beings, we are more likely to approach them with empathy, respect, and reverence. This perspective challenges the traditional view of animals as mere resources or objects and instead highlights their role as fellow travellers on the path of existence.
In spiritual practices, animals are often seen as carriers of spiritual messages. For instance, many cultures hold that encounters with specific animals can signify important life lessons or messages from the spirit world. Whether it’s the calm presence of a cat, the steadfastness of a horse, or the grace of a bird in flight, each animal can be viewed as a symbol of spiritual guidance and insight. This recognition invites us to be more mindful of our interactions with them and to honor their presence in our lives.
The Interconnectedness of All Beings
Believing that animals have souls reinforces the idea of interconnectedness that is central to many spiritual teachings. If every being possesses a soul, then all life forms are part of a unified spiritual network. This interconnectedness suggests that harming or disregarding one part of this network impacts the whole. By acknowledging the spiritual essence of animals, we are reminded of our responsibility to care for and protect all living beings.
This belief also encourages us to see beyond the physical characteristics of animals and to appreciate their spiritual significance. For example, observing an animal’s behavior might reveal deeper truths about the natural world and our place within it. In this light, acts of kindness towards animals become not only ethical choices but also spiritual practices that nurture our own souls.
Pets in the Spirit Realm
When a cherished pet passes into spirit we feel the grief as keenly as if it were a human relative. As spiritualists we take comfort in knowing that there is life after death, that our pets still draw near to us from the spirit realm and we may one day reunite with them on the other side.
Pets are often brought through in clairvoyance readings providing evidence of the continuous existence of the soul.
Conclusion
The belief that animals have souls and exist in spirit offers a profound way to connect with the natural world and reframe our understanding of life. It invites us to see animals not just as physical entities but as beings with their own spiritual essence and journey. By embracing this perspective, we enrich our own spiritual lives and contribute to a more compassionate and interconnected world.
As we navigate our relationships with the animals around us, let us remember their sacred essence and honour the divine spark within them. In doing so, we not only uplift our own spirits but also contribute to the greater harmony of the universe.

It was late afternoon, cases packed for taking our 2 grandchildren for an exciting trip to New York the next day. My husband and I are adventurous travellers but I was feeling apprehensive about this trip. I had been asking spirit for help, ensuring that all went well. Looking out of our front window, a bird appeared on our porch gutter – a crow in fact. We’ve lived here for 12 years and I have never seen a bird on that gutter, let alone a big crow! I began to wonder if it was significant – a message perhaps? And here comes the amazing thing!! Less than 5 minutes later, an email pops up. “Oh, my monthly Spiritualist Newsletter. I wonder what it’s about this month”. I couldn’t believe it! It was entitled “The Spiritual Significance of Birds”. It listed 8 birds, one of which was a crow….. “The crow encourages us to embrace the unknown and trust in the magical processes of life”.
We spent 5 days in New York. Yes, not everything went to plan but everything worked out well in the end and we all had an absolutely amazing time…… Thank you spirit for being there!!
Animals and humans are the same they both have a soul, the soul is the mind of the spirit, the differenc between animals and humans is we have God’s spirit in our soul. God’s spirit is a seeking spirit it seeks the energy from your body’s feelings that energy becomes you in heaven, so be careful were you put your feelings if all your feelings are for the material world when you pass you will not go to heaven as your spirit only knows the material world so is trapped in the material world that is hell. Heaven is pure energy the holy spirit is pure love, God is to heaven as humanity is to Earth
